No real budget for online marketing?

online-marketing-no-budgetSo you don’t have much of a budget for online marketing, plus there are so many steps. Where do you start to do these tasks, how do you find the time, and is there a way to learn to actually do the following:

  • Website – design, hosting, and updates
  • Search Engine Optimization, including local SEO
  • Basic contact management
  • Building a list of customers and prospective customers
  • Social media
  • Email campaigns
  • Tracking your results…

The list goes on and on. But can these online marketing tasks be done for FREE? The answer is YES if you know what to do.

First, you need to develop a Marketing Plan:

  1. Figure out what you are able to invest
  2. Identify the biggest gap in the marketing that you are doing now
  3. Find ways to bridge that gap
  4. Prioritize your opportunities
  5. Measure results
  6. Make adjustments where needed

One of the best things you can do is use your own expertise! You’re the expert at what you do, so let others know about it. After all, your customers are people who are looking for someone like you to help them out. Share your knowledge on your website, in images or short videos, and send your info out via email and social media. The best thing is that once you have created a bit of  content you can use it in multiple ways.

For example, you can make a list of tips, offer fun industry facts, or ideas about how to prepare for the upcoming season or holiday. Potential customers are attracted to businesses that are helpful, and existing customers will be more likely to refer you to others!

Focus on marketing tasks you can do yourself, such as creating content, graphics (use this no-cost tool, https://www.canva.com/), and basic social media. Track what works and do more of that.

While you’re at it, remember to claim and optimize your Google My Business listing – it’s the foundation of your online marketing presence! Then, consider asking customers to five feedback by giving you a review. Share these reviews on your website and on social media (a way you can use the same content multiple times)!

Lastly, don’t underestimate the value of in-person meetings. Find out when there are tradeshows in your area. While a booth can be very expensive, attending these events is usually free or low cost. “Work the Room” and talk with exhibitors and other attendees. You never know when you will meet a potential customer, plus you’ll be gaining visibility for your business. Volunteer at community events, which is another great way to market your business. Be sure to find networking groups, too. They can provide an effective way to promote your business and even create potential partnerships by collaborating with other non-competitive business owners.
